Cranstons Traditional Cumberland Sausage has been named the best in the UK ! claiming the top prize at the Q Guild of Butchers National BBQ Final 2013.
Held on Wednesday 19th June at the Weber Grill Academy™ in Marsh Baldon, Oxfordshire, celebrity chef Jeremy Fowler judged 21 of the best BBQ meats from across the UK and Cranstons sausage emerged victorious.
Earlier this year seven regional stages took place across the UK to find the best products to go forward to the final competition. Due to a high level of entries the final has been a highly-anticipated event.
Rob McManus, Butchery Manager at Cranstons’ Cumbrian Food Hall said: “We knew there’d be some stiff competition as everyone was a winner at their respective regional stage and no two products were the same, so we’re absolutely delighted we’ve won.
“As a Q Guild member, we regard ourselves as one of the best butchers in the UK, so it’s important that our products reflect this. We can now proudly say the best sausages in the UK come from Cranstons.”
There was a brilliant mix of entries in the sausage category, from succulent traditional pork to a very unique beef, caramelised onion, tomato and horseradish entry. Due to the quality and taste of the final entries, the judging process was a tough one but Cranstons sublime Traditional Cumberland Sausage took the overall crown.
Cranstons’ first place was closely followed by Crombies of Edinburgh’s Pork and Honey Mustard Sausage in second and Turnbull’s of Alnwick’s Traditional Pork Sausage in third place.
The winning sausage, whose recipe dates back to 1914, has protected regional status joining a small and elite list of distinguished PGI protected products including Jersey Royal potatoes, Melton Mowbray Pork Pies, Stilton Cheese, Parma Ham and Champagne.
Philip Cranston, Managing Director of Cranstons Quality Butchers, said: “Our Traditional Cumberland sausage recipe dates back to when my Great Uncle established the business, it remains our best-selling line today. It is much loved by both locals and visitors to the area who take it home in large quantities to stock up their freezers. I am thrilled to have won.’’.
