Cranstons launch regional delicacy Solway Salt Marsh Lamb

Cranstons will be selling Salt Marsh lamb from 1st August up until late October giving customers a chance to sample a rare regional delicacy.

The lamb which is sourced direct from Richard Irving and Mike Waning’s Anthorn Farm grazes the salt washed marshes of the Solway resulting in a delicious and distinctive sweet flavour.

Anthorn Farm lies 14 miles North West of Carlisle on the Solway Estuary. The flock has access to 350 acres of marsh land in an area of breath taking scenery. As well as producing fantastic and distinctive lamb the marsh sustains a rare breeding colony of natterjack toads which thrive in the closely grazed grassland sustained by the flock.

Mike Waning, Farm Manager, explains the why the lamb has such a distinctive flavour ‘Our lambs graze the shores of the Solway between the spring and the autumn, the resulting lamb far from tasting salty, has a sweet and fragrant flavour. For many years, the sweet, tender and distinctly flavoured meat of lambs grazed on coastal salt marshes has been regarded as a fine delicacy, particularly in France, it is only in recent years that it has gained popularity in the UK’.

Salt Marsh Lamb is the latest speciality meat to be launched by Cranstons who stock a number of different speciality meats throughout the year incuding rare breed Saddleback Pork from Brougham Hall Farm, Rose Veal from Heaves Farm in South Lakeland and Herdwick Lamb reared on the Lakeland Fells

Roger Cranston, operations director explains ‘Alongside our standard locally sourced meats Cranstons feature a number of regional specialities throughout the year giving our customers the chance to try something a bit different. This summer we are really excited to be offering Salt Marsh Lamb from Richard and Mike’s Farm. I visited the farm this week and it really is a unique environment in which to rear sheep, the end product is delicious and deserves wider recognition as a regional delicacy’.

Salt Marsh Lamb will be on sale from Monday 1st August at Cranstons Carlisle shop and at Cranstons, Cumbrian Food Hall in Penrith. Alongside traditional cuts such as leg and shoulder joints, lamb leg steaks and cutlets Cranstons will be offering a Salt Marsh Lamb Burger.
