Cumbrian Food Hall Suppliers triumph at Great Taste Awards

Five Eden producers have won prestigious Great Taste Gold Awards highlighting the strength of our regions artisan food industry. Appleby Creamery, Burbushes of Penrith, Country Puddings and Cranstons Quality Butchers all picked up Great Taste gold awards for their produce. Whilst Mr Vikkis ‘Banana Habanero’ won a highly coveted 3 star gold, only 125 of which were awarded from 10,000 products judged nationally. The 3 star ‘Banana Habanero’ has been shortlisted for the ultimate Great Taste ‘’Golden Fork’’ Award.

The Great Taste Awards are organised by the Guild of Fine Food and are the acknowledged benchmark for speciality food and drink. They have been described as the 'Oscars' of the food world. Great Taste is simply about taste, not clever branding or smart packaging.  Judges are presented simply with the unpackaged food- they taste, confer and re-taste before making the decision on whether a product should be awarded a gold credit. 

Of all the Eden winners Mr Vikki’s of High Hesket brought home the most awards, racking up an amazing 13 Great Taste Awards, 9 1 star gold awards, 3 2 star gold awards and 1 3 star award. Adam Marks makes his spiced chutneys and pickles from his small production unit and is earning a national reputation for excellence. Adam said ‘’ Being a small Artisan producer I pride myself on making high quality products which the great Taste awards we have won endorse, the Logo gives customers confidence that they are buying independently rigorously judged products. We now have 69 1 and 2 star awards but finally after 8 years hard toil we have finally won a 3* Gold which we are very proud off. I am looking forward to hearing whether we have won the golden fork award’’. The winner will be announced at a glitzy award ceremony in London on the 9th September.

Appleby Creamery’s Eden Organic Brie and Eden Pearl both earned 1 star Great Taste Gold Award’s topping off a great few weeks for the firm who won 2 silver awards at the International Cheese Awards at Nantwich and earned the title overall Champion at the Dumfries Cheese Awards with Black Dub Blue. Maurice Walton, managing director exclaimed’ ‘This is unprecedented! Five of our cheeses have taken the highest industry accolades in days of one another. We are thrilled at being recognised for excellence across our range’

Local farmer’s wife Lynne Mallinson set up Country Pudding’s from her farmhouse kitchen 12 years ago and has won a string of great taste awards for her traditional puddings. This year Lynne’s Syrup Sponge Pudding earned a one star gold. ‘’ It is fantastic that we have won another Great Taste award. Our business has grown dramatically in recent years and continues to flourish as people demand good quality, locally produced products.”

Burbushes of Penrith earned 2 great taste gold awards picking up 1 star gold’s for both their Cured Pressed Ox Tongue and their Duck Liver and Orange Pate. Andrew Barton, Director said ‘’We are delighted that 2 of our products have won gold awards adding to our successes in the last few years. It is great to see Cumbrian producers winning awards for their quality produce’’

Cranstons Quality Butchers won 1 star gold for Cranstons Dry Cured Back Bacon and 1 star gold for Honey and Mustard Sausage. Speaking at the Cumbrian Food Hall Philip Cranston expressed his delight ‘’ It is fantastic that Eden’s thriving artisan food scene has been recognised with a massive 20 great taste gold awards this year. Cranstons work with all the winning producers at the Cumbrian Food Hall, We know how lucky we are to have such passionate food producers on our doorstep and it is wonderful to see Eden’s produce recognised by the Guild of Fine Food’s independent experts’’
