Orton Grange: Meet the neighbours!

Our Food Hall at Orton Grange sits on an ever expanding rural business hub, just west of Carlisle. The site has family at its heart with every business run by families.

How did it start?

Orton Grange was solely a farm up until 14 years ago when the Martin family diversified the use of the farm and some of its out-buildings. In 2004, Richard and his sister Claire opened a small farm shop, café and gift shop on the site directly next to the A595. Together they have continued to farm some 500 cattle and welcome seven businesses to Orton Grange, including us, Cranstons.

Who’s on site?

Cranstons

We opened up shop in 2013 in a purpose-built barn extension next to the gift shop and café. We stock a host of our favourite products from local suppliers in Cumbria, South West Scotland and Northumberland as well as our own renowned butchery and delicatessen ranges. We’ve recently welcomed Fyne Fish to the gang.

Fyne Fish of Cockermouth has been named Deli and Farmshop’s Fishmonger of the Year 2018. Sharon and John Heron have recently expanded into the Orton Grange Food Hall offering prepacked fish, following the success of their concession at our flagship food hall in Penrith.

At the moment the shelves are replenished regularly with their best selling lines such as fresh salmon and fresh scallops but they can take orders for collection too!

Orton Grange Cafe & Gifts

Richard’s sister Claire built the café and gift shop from scratch. Now she’s retired, the reins are in the hands of Kimberley Trow – her mum runs the Shearing Shed, on site.

Kimberley took over the running of the café and gift shop early this year.  She now opens the café and shop on Sundays and is looking to open the café on evenings.

Kimberley: “I am really excited to have taken on the Café and Gift Shop. The gift shop has a fantastic product range with a lovely selection of baby gifts and a whole host of quality brands from Katie Loxton and Joma Jewellery to Sophie Allport, Voyage and Polish Pottery. The Café has seen the biggest change so far as we now open every Sunday and bank holiday Monday, have launched a more comprehensive breakfast menu including our ‘Farmers Full English’ which is available all day on a Sunday.  We are planning to open the café as an evening venue.  The whole team is really looking forward to a live acoustic night featuring local musicians Kerry Weir and David Mason on the 31st August.”

The Shearing Shed

Ally Trow runs the Shearing Shed which sits above the café. The Shearing Shed opened its doors in 2007 and has experienced growth over the years which has seen her create a talented team of stylists

Their opening hours are: Tues 10-5, Wed & Thurs 10-7, Fri 10-5, Sat 9-4, Closed Mondays & Sundays

Paula said: “Our new bigger treatment centre has been great for business as it’s tucked away from the other businesses on site and offers a quiet and relaxing environment for our customers, I am sure it’s not that normal to find a beauticians on a farm next to the cow sheds but it works for us!”
