Eden based master butchers Cranstons are sponsoring two talented young local athletes to gain coaching qualifications. Esme Davies and Josh Liddle are due to complete a Young Athletes Leader Course this year strengthening the coaching team at the extremely popular Eden Runners juniors club.
The junior section is an offshoot of Eden Runners and trains on Thursday evenings throughout the year. There are currently around 60 members aged from 8 to 18 and with a further 50 youngsters waiting to join. Training more coaches will allow Eden Runners to take on more juniors cutting its waiting list.
Head Coach Derek Hurton said the club was delighted to receive support from Cranstons. "We really want to expand the club and give more children the chance to enjoy the opportunities that running provides. Eden Runners Juniors offers something for everyone; from competing for club, county or country; to just running with friends in England's most beautiful scenery.
“The support from Cranstons will train two of our junior members as coaches so they can help the next generation of athletes achieve their best. Esme and Josh are two of our most committed athletes, competing regularly at a high standard in cross-country, track and on the fells. Both of them embody what the club is about: hard training and 100% commitment when racing, but perhaps most importantly ensuring the club is a happy and fun place to be with friends.”
Esme said: "I am looking forward to helping members of the club improve and set goals for themselves and see them progress in running competitions such as the Cumbria League which is a great introduction to cross country and track running locally. I'm interested in helping each athlete improve their running technique which can be achieved in various ways but practise and repetition is essential.”
Martin Jones, Cranstons Retail Director said: “We are thrilled to be sponsoring Esme and Josh through their coaching qualification, Eden Runners is a real local success story, the numbers of juniors who are committed to training hard week in and week out is just brilliant and we hope strengthening the coaching team will allow them to accommodate more of the juniors who are currently on their waiting lists.”
